Sunset at Manly Beach

Picture
Above and following are photographs of  Manly Beach, Auckland, New Zealand, not far from where I live.
Most mornings I walk the beach - and there is always something different happening. I've seen whales, seals, dolphins, and lots of sea birds.

Rangitoto Island from Little Manly Beach

Picture
On the other side of the peninsula is Little Manly Beach - with views out to Auckland's famous Rangitoto Island.
The city lies to the left.
This is taken from Little Manly Beach - where I often swim if it's too windy at Big Manly Beach.
I have climbed to the top of Rangitoto Island - it's a lovely bush walk with great views of the city and inner harbor and Pacific Ocean. There are still some batches (small holiday homes) on the island, but no one lives there as the island is a reserve.
The island is one of the most photographed landscapes of the city, and appears on cards, calendars, books and t-shirts. I never tire of looking at the island. Dolphins and whales often swim into the bay, and when they do, people crowd to Little Manly to watch them.

The pohutukawa tree is New Zealand's Christmas tree, flowering in December - or sometimes earlier. I love these trees and look forward each year to their spectacular flowering. This one is on the beachfront at Orewa, not far from where I live. You can look across the harbor to Manly and the Whangaparaoa Peninsula.

Here is a close-up of the pohutukawa flowers. The flowers are soft, the scent is quite strong - and lovely. Bees love the nectar. Here in New Zealand you can buy pohutukawa honey. Yum!
